Lighting That Brings Art to Life: Z-MAC Electric x Jean’s Clay Studio

Lighting can change everything. Not just how a space looks—but how it feels, how it functions, and how it tells a story. That’s exactly what we had the opportunity to do in our recent collaboration with Jean’s Clay Studio.
A Space Designed for Craft and Creativity
Jean Wells, the artist behind Jean’s Clay Studio, has been creating contemporary stoneware pottery in Milwaukee for over 30 years. Her work is anything but ordinary. Each piece is hand-thrown, layered with colored clay, and carved using a technique called sgraffito—a process that reveals intricate, vibrant designs inspired by nature, everyday life, and bold imagery.
After shaping each piece on the wheel, layers of colored clay slip are applied. Once partially dried, Jean carefully carves through those layers to create her signature designs. The pottery is then finished with a clear glaze and fired at over 2,000 degrees, resulting in durable, lead-free pieces that are safe for both the dishwasher and microwave.
Her new showroom was designed to showcase not just pottery—but the artistry and detail behind every piece. That’s where lighting became essential.
